Putting Green Installation: Dos & Don'ts.

A backyard putting green is one of the most rewarding synthetic turf projects you can install — but the details separate a green that rolls true for years from one that settles, pools, or plays uneven after a single season. This guide covers the four critical areas of putting green installation: base preparation, drainage, cup placement, and fringe transitions, plus the common mistakes we see on DIY and low-budget installs across Orange County.

Base preparation: start with compaction and contour

The base is the foundation of every green. We remove the existing sod and organic material, then sculpt the sub-grade to match the designed contours — swales, ridges, and false fronts included. The goal is a 3–4% cross-slope for surface drainage plus a compacted aggregate layer that won't shift under foot traffic or weather cycles.

Do

  • Excavate 4–6 inches depending on soil and traffic load.
  • Use clean, angular crushed rock (3/4" minus) as the base aggregate.
  • Compact in lifts with a plate compactor, wetting between passes.
  • Sculpt subtle slopes and breaks that match your planned putting lines.

Don't

  • Build on top of native soil without removing organics.
  • Compact everything in one thick lift — it won't bind uniformly.
  • Leave the base perfectly flat; water needs somewhere to go.
  • Use rounded pea gravel or decomposed granite that shifts under load.

Drainage: keep water off the green and out of the base

A putting green that holds water will grow moss, soften under foot, and eventually heave. Drainage is addressed in two layers: the surface pitch and the sub-base. The putting surface itself is engineered to drain vertically through the turf backing, but that only works if the water can exit the base layer below.

Do

  • Maintain a minimum 1–2% slope across the playing surface.
  • Install a perforated drain pipe or dry well if the surrounding soil is clay-heavy.
  • Use a permeable backing on the putting surface so water passes through quickly.
  • Grade the sub-base lower around the perimeter so water can exit laterally.

Don't

  • Trap the green between retaining walls with no outlet.
  • Use impermeable weed barrier directly under the putting surface.
  • Ignore standing water in the excavation — it will return after the first rain.
  • Create birdbaths by over-contouring low spots.

Cup placement: location, spacing, and depth

Cup placement determines how the green plays. Most residential greens have 3–5 cups. Position them to create interesting putts, avoid dead straight lines, and force players to read breaks across the full contour of the green. Cups are typically set into a plastic or metal cup sleeve with a real regulation flagstick, so the ball reacts like it would on a real course.

Do

  • Space cups 8–12 feet apart for variety without crowding.
  • Set cups near changes in grade so putts break meaningfully.
  • Use a real regulation cup (4.25" diameter) and flagstick.
  • Install the cup sleeve so the top sits flush with the turf surface.

Don't

  • Cluster all cups in one flat area — it wastes the contour.
  • Cut cups too shallow; the ball will lip out or sit above grade.
  • Place cups directly against the fringe where chip shots tear the edge.
  • Use painted rings or fake targets instead of real cups.

Fringe transitions: the difference between fake and finished

The fringe is the higher-pile turf surrounding the putting surface. It frames the green visually, provides a realistic chipping surface, and hides the seam between the low-pile green and the surrounding lawn or hardscape. A clean fringe transition is the detail most people notice first.

Do

  • Use a separate higher-pile product for the fringe (typically 1.25–1.75").
  • Taper the base height so the putting surface sits slightly lower than the fringe.
  • Seam the two turfs with precision tape and adhesive, not visible nails.
  • Power-brush the fringe away from the green to define the edge.

Don't

  • Use the same turf for the green and the fringe — it looks unnatural.
  • Leave a hard seam or exposed nails at the transition line.
  • Install the fringe at the same height as the putting surface.
  • Skip infill in the fringe; it will mat and flatten over time.

Common mistakes that shorten the life of a green

Even with good materials, shortcuts in installation show up within one to two years. The most common failures we are called to repair are seam separation, low-spot ponding, cup sleeves that sit above grade, and bases that were never fully compacted. Each of these is avoidable with proper prep and patience.

  • Skipping the geotextile fabric between native soil and base rock.
  • Using nails instead of seam tape where the green meets the fringe.
  • Over-infilling the putting surface, which slows roll speed and traps moisture.
  • Ignoring expansion joints where the green abuts concrete or pavers.
